T is for Temple Court

A secluded alleyway in the Old City, the Temple Court is home to a couple dozen small shrines and chapels, dedicated to both the Five Gods, and many demigods. The “Grand Court” in the northwest corner contains an inn, two open air shrines, and several small temples on the ground and upper levels. An archway leads from this court out into the Old City streets. Several shrines and a shop selling religious items surround the East Court, with the Column Gate just south leading to an Old City street. The two areas are connected by a covered alley with a chapel on the upper level. Both courts are connected to the area to the south by two more covered alleys.

A map of the ground level of the Temple Court. The buildings are crowded together around four courtyards.

Another half-dozen or so shrines surround the Court of the Great Tree, just south of the northern two areas. The Great Tree itself, sacred to Daeroudth, is an oak towering above even the second level of the surrounding structures. Another covered alley leads to the most secluded area in the Temple Court — a hospital run by the Outstretched Hands is the main structure in the Healers Court, and contains a door out to an Old City street.

The original map of the Temple Walk by Dyson Logos contained only ground-level buildings. The close-packed structures reminded me of some post-apocalypse enclosed enclaves in some movies, and I wanted a second level to make the place even more claustrophobic. I added a number of interior and exterior stairways, and drew a separate map of the upper level, with interconnected shrines and passages. (I’m not posting that map here, as it looks pretty crude compared to Dyson’s map. Maybe I’ll post it later.) I’m considering putting together a lower level as well, but haven’t gotten that far yet.
