The Nexus

Deep under the surface of the earth lies the intersection of several passages to different cavern systems. The Nexus connects a subterranean river to the drier caves of various underground societies. Three tunnels lead from the northern section of the cavern, and three from the south. Additionally, the river is navigable to the west of the cavern, and has a mostly dry path alongside in that direction. To the east, the river tunnel is mostly submerged.

An ancient stone bridge, made of a single piece of rock, arches over the river to connect the north half of the cavern with the south half. Geometric patterns are carved into the sides of the bridge, although there are no apparent chisel marks. The floor of the entire cavern slopes downward toward the river flowing through the 20 foot deep crevasse. The northern edge pf the ravine rises about ten feet above the southern edge. Ledges rise above the floor of the cavern at the north and south ends.

An old iron and brass elevator connects the floor of the northern section to the higher ledge thirty feet up. Counter weights are connected by chains to the platform that can be raised and lowered using large wheels at the top and bottom of the construction. A low, partially worked stone archways leads to a passage under the lower ledge.

A small side cave has a narrow entrance well above the floor of the southern section, and hidden behind some stalactites and stalagmites. Also, a ledge on the south side of the river is completely hidden from the south half of the cavern.
